MAE has established a strong connection with companies, universities, and various institutes in the Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta region to facilitate synergetic research and development in a number of areas including
Advanced Aircraft Noise Technology Center (AANTC), led by Professor Xin Zhang, brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and advanced anechoic wind tunnel testing to develop new computational methods, noise prediction methods noise reduction concepts, and provides engineering solution for industry. The centre possesses high-order in-house computational aeroacoustic codes, and various noise and flow facilities.
The Building Energy Research Center (BERC) utilizes the research strengths of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in energy efficient technologies and building environmental research to further develop state-of-the-art technology and products for commercial applications. Our research focuses on building related energy efficient technologies (including ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, etc.), effective usage of energy (energy saving, solar energy, waste heat), and indoor air quality (health and comfort). We aim to create a healthy, comfortable and sustainable living environment. BERC will also collaborate with Mainland institutions and industry, as well as for education and training.
The Center for Engineering Materials and Reliability (CEMAR) strives to become a technical platform to serve the Pearl River Delta industries, as well as an education center for innovative and creative engineers, and as a bridge between industries, universities and research institutions.
The HKUST Energy Institute (EI) serves as a multidisciplinary platform for integrating, facilitating and enabling University-wide programs in energy-related research, development and education. EI is a focal point for research in targeted areas of strengths including sustainable energy production (fuel cells, biofuels, hydrogen, photovoltaic, thermoelectric), energy storage (batteries, regenerative fuel cells, super-capacitors), and energy efficiency and conservation (energy efficient buildings, ecotronics). EI is engaging the best and brightest from academia, government and industry to create innovative solutions for current and future energy challenges in Hong Kong, China and beyond.
The services provided by EPACK Lab include prototyping, process development, material characterization, reliability testing and failure analysis, and modeling and simulation. It runs an industrial consortium to support industry-based research and development work in the area of electronic packaging.
The HKUST LED-FPD Technology R&D Center at Foshan was formally established in June 2010 upon approval from the University. The Center, with funding support from the Foshan Government, will strengthen HKUST's research infrastructure and activities in the Pearl River Delta region and provide HKUST with a platform to reach out for collaboration opportunities and funding sources in the Mainland.
FINETEX-HKUST R & D Center serves as a platform between academia and industry to carry out targeted scientific research. HKUST would provide technological expertise to Finetex to undertake multi-disciplinary research and development of nanofibers and nanocomposites.
The Institute of Integrated Microsystem (I2MS) is an interdisciplinary research team spanning multiple departments within the School of Engineering and the School of Science, such that various research activities pertaining to micro & nano systems at HKUST can be effectively and efficiently linked together.
The Laboratory is an extension of the research operation of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Shenzhen. It is located in the HKUST IER Building in the Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park. It is used as a platform to enable Mechanical Engineering faculty members to interact more closely with industrial and research partners in Shenzhen.
The Robotics Institute serves as a multidisciplinary platform for integrating, facilitating and enabling University-wide programs in robotics-related research, development and education. Its establishment is a strategic initiative of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in its 25th anniversary campaign aimed at advancing the University’s academic strengths in selected cross disciplinary areas that are strategically important to HKUST’s future development.
Advanced Engineering Material Facility
The Advanced Engineering Materials Facility (AEMF) is a multi-disciplinary central research facility located at HKUST. Its mission is to provide state-of-art research equipment and technical expertise for HKUST as well as Hong Kong industries to develop advanced engineering materials technology and its applications. The facility's research areas include processing, microstructural design and new materials development, non-destructive testing and failure analysis, applied mechanics and testing methodology.
Design and Manufacturing Services Facility
The Design and Manufacturing Services Facility (DMSF) focuses on multidisciplinary and application-oriented research programs that will create impact on the design and manufacturing industries in Hong Kong and the neighboring regions. The Facility has technical expertise to provide support of the engineering design and manufacturing needs of teaching and learning activities, academic research and industrial collaboration projects. It creates stimulus for collaboration and interaction between HKUST, local industries and international bodies.
CLP Power Wind/ Wave Tunnel Facility
The CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility (WWTF) is one of the world class Central Research Facilities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, providing specialist professional Wind Engineering expertise and services. The state-of-the-art facility comprises two boundary layer wind tunnel test sections, a water tank, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) capabilities and a custom-built, two-degree-of-freedom tall building motion simulator. The Facility is equipped to provide aerodynamic, civil/structural engineering, environmental fluid mechanics, and environmental engineering expertise for teaching, research, and expert consulting services.
