Prof. Chen received his bachelor’s degree from Zhejiang University, and his PhD in Materials Science from Arizona State University. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University before joining HKUST. He holds a joint appointment at the Department of Chemistry.

Research in his group applies materials science and electrochemistry to understand and control structural evolution at nanoscales. The group also use the same set of knowledge in the design of electrochemical devices, particularly for energy storage.

Research Interests

Morphology Evolution of Materials,
Nanoporous Metal Structures,
Electrochemical Energy Storage.
