HKUST-MAE team scooped the Champion, Most Innovative Design Award and Most Popular Design Award for their designed lifting-releasing mechanism for mining industry handling in the 6th Greater China Design Competition (GCDC), organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on 25 and 26 March 2017 on campus. The team included fours MAE students - Carl Lu, Page Wong, Taric Chan, Tony Chung and two international students - Samuel Fox, Wenbo Wang from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Iowa (UIowa), under supervision of Prof. Robin Ma and Dr. Matias Perret.
This was the first time HKUST partnered with UIowa for an annual design challenge via the Virtual Internal Project Team (VIPT) program, with a number of students from each university working together as a team on a robot design for use in the mining industry. During the program, students met for the prototype design and joint meetings at UIowa and HKUST and utilized Skype and e-communications to coordinate project management when team members were back at their respective campuses. In teaming up students from the two universities, the program also enabled participants to gain a cross-cultural perspective, improve their communication skills and learn how to work with people from different countries.
GCDC, comprising a presentation session and a demonstration session, is a university student design competition among Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Macau universities and a platform for students to demonstrate their engineering knowledge and strengthen their presentation skills by designing an innovative prototype on the topics ranging from environmental to social issues. This year, eight teams participated in the event and were asked to design a mechanism which is capable of lifting the simulated ore (grain rice) and depositing these ores to the container by using an energy of two liters of water within a time limit.
