Exploring magnetocaloric and elastocaloric materials for high-efficient solid-state cooling

Abstract

In the past decade, there has been an increased surge in the research on magnetocaloric and elastocaloric materials for room temperature solid-state refrigerators. Our work is devoted to explore rare-earth based and magnetic shape memory materials suitable for magnetic or mechanical cooling applications. In the first part of this talk, the strategy of mass fabrication of magnetic refrigerants having large entropy change, small hysteresis, good mechanical properties and high thermal conductivity, is discussed. In the second part, some novel characteristics in magnetic shape memory materials undergoing magnetostructural transition other than conventional shape memory alloys are overviewed. The strong coupling between lattice and spin inspires the discovery of new multi-field driven elastocaloric alloys. Last, the barocaloric effect as a sister-cooling alternative is also discussed.

Biography

Prof. Jian Liu is a full Professor for Rare-Earth Magnetic Materials at Ningbo Institute of Material Technology and Engineering (NIMTE), CAS. He did his PhD in Shanghai Jiaotong University, and postdoctoral from 2006 to 2012 at Leibniz Institute IFW Dresden, Germany. 2012 he joined NIMTE, CAS. His scientific interests span from magnetic shape memory alloys for actuator and sensor applications to solid state energy efficient magnetic/elastic cooling with a particular emphasis on controllable solidification technique and tailoring microstructure and magnetostructural properties.

He has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals including Natural Materials, Acta Materialia (14) and Scripta Materialia (20), has filled 10 Chinese patents. The citation of publication is more than 2300, and the h-index is 26. His group has successfully established the stable cooperation with famous magnets company (Hengdian Group DMEGC Magnetics) and leading household appliances enterprise (Hair). In 2013, he was awarded Youth-1000-Plan Program Grant. He served as the chairman at the Chinese Conference in Magnetic Cooling Materials and Systems (2016, 2018).
