Molecular and Multiscale Engineering Flows

In multiscale flow systems, molecular effects require special treatment beyond the scope of conventional fluid modelling. In this talk, I will describe our recent work on molecular fluid dynamics and our search for models that balance improved accuracy with computational efficiency.  I will discuss the coupled molecular/continuum techniques we are constructing, and show that scale separation in some physical situations can be exploited to computational advantage. I will show results from engineering applications, including acoustothermal atomization of liquids, the extraordinary permeability of nanotube membranes, and gas Knudsen pumps with no moving parts.
